The first flyer was originally called a "broadside." Flyers were in production during the mid-1860s, and these single-sided "broad" sheets were used primarily for advertising and political purposes, but were also used to announce theatrical events like plays and operas. During World War I, broadsides evolved into another political propaganda tool called "leaflets," which were dropped by air to communicate with troops and civilians. To this day, some businesses still consider a flyer a "leaflet."
Although your reasons for creating a flyer might be vastly different from its early history, flyers are a popular promotional tool. Not only is a flyer economical to print in mass quantities, their low "per unit" cost allows you to distribute them more freely than you would a tri-fold brochure or a custom mailer.
Sprintprint.com upholds the history of the flyer through our ability to design and print flyers in a variety of sizes and shapes. You can print your flyers with different stocks of paper or with a variety of colors, including black-and-white.
